How to Change a Habit

There are only two reasons to listen to this episode: if you want to learn how to stop doing a bad habit or how to start doing a good habit.

If you fit into either of these two categories, then this episode is for you, because I’ll give you an effective strategy for how to change a habit, starting today. Whether that’s a habit you’d like to get rid of, or one you’d like to start doing, I will show you how to start today. This is an episode where you will definitely want to take notes!

When listening to this episode, think about an “aha” moment that you can apply to your life right now. What we learn in this podcast will build on what came before, but I want every episode to have something concrete that you can apply to your life right now. By writing that down, that will help you visualize it and then put it into practice.

One more thing, if you haven’t already, check out Episode 3, “What are Habits”, by clicking here. That will give you the background that you need to get the most out of this episode.

What you’ll learn in this episode (it’s a lot…)

The neurological basis of habits. That sounds scary, but what this means is that habits are rooted in the brain. So yeah, you’re going to learn something about how the brain works.

How to design your habits. Once you understand how brain function determines habits, you will be able to take steps to create and transform your habitual behavior. Then you will be in control of your habits, not the other way around.

Why mindset isn’t enough. Changing your habits is not something magical you can just think into being. That’s because habits don’t operate on the level of conscious thought. So creating positive thoughts isn’t enough to form new habits. But your conscious mind does play a big role, so make sure to pay attention.

What does it mean to say that the brain runs on autopilot? Why should you pay attention to the brain’s autopilot and how can you take advantage of it?

What are the three main parts of the brain? Which part of the brain is the oldest? (Hint: it’s also the most powerful part of the brain).

How can you use visualization and imagination to train and transform your brain’s ability to form new habits and stop bad habits?

Finally, learn a simple and effective technique that can stop a bad habit in its tracks and replace it with a new one (no matter how deeply entrenched that bad habit is).

I know that last part sounds too good to be true, but I want you to try this technique, and then let me know if it works. I think you’ll be surprised. And I believe in it so much, that I want to personally hear about the results. Let me know what habit you tried to transform using this technique by emailing me at [email protected]
